Lily Zinberg Takes 2nd in Hildene Essay Contest

May 30, 2025

We’re sending out a big Maple Street cheer for 8th grader Lily Zinberg, who earned second place in this year’s Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition! Her powerful piece was selected from more than 150 essays submitted by 8th graders from all across Vermont. Lily’s essay didn’t just shine—it sparked.

Taking on the big topic of political polarization, Lily explored how media literacy can help people bridge divides and connect through conversation instead of conflict. She made a strong case for teaching students how to recognize misinformation, pause before clicking, and seek out multiple sources—a skillset she sees as key to building empathy and understanding. We’re so impressed by her clarity, compassion, and conviction.

The Lincoln Essay Competition put on annually by Hildene challenges Vermont students to wrestle with complex issues—just like Lincoln did—and Lily’s voice rose to that challenge with grace and insight.

We couldn’t be prouder. Congratulations, Lily! You’ve reminded us all what thoughtful, engaged citizenship looks like. Keep writing, keep questioning, and keep leading the way.
